Eremophila spp.

Consider the humble Eremophilla particularly if your in a sun drenched and sandy soiled part of the world. They are after all a very diverse and pretty species and to add to that they flower in Winter through Spring giving that little bit of zing to the garden. How cool is that!! They come in all textures and foliage colours, from powdery silver with yellow, violet or orange flowers, bright glossy green with orange, yellow, pink or red flowers and they attract birds butterflies and bees and look divine.

If its a more formal garden you're after this little plant will handle pruning or look equally lovely when allowed to grow by itself. It does like good drainage and light and can be frost tender so in colder climates not really a stayer. It grows quite well in Melbourne as I have some in the north facing part of the garden, and is drought tolerant. A great little filler shrub for small to medium gardens, in rockeries, containers or on the balcony or patio. Mixes beautifully with other Australian natives, and is a great cottage garden plant. It will grow happily in containers or courtyards and should establish in 2-3 years.
Eremophila spp. is available as a shrub and also in a prostrate plant so there are a whole lot of cultivars and varieties out there.

Consider this little beauty and have a look for it next time your at the nursery.
